2020 was an impeccable year for music, new releases and emerging artists. Amapiano, Alte, Afrobeats, Afroswing and every other adaptation of these genres reigned, but 2021 made for a meteoric rise and catastrophic takeover in the best way possible, for music inspired by the Mother continent. And of course this couldn't have been done without the help of social media, viral dances, memes, gifs, remixes etc
This year, Nas dropped two fire albums, we got unlikely collaborations such as Lil Baby and Kirk Franklin and Elton John featuring Nicki Minaj and Young Thug and we got a surprise feature from Jay-Z on Kanye West's track 'Jail.' Not to mention the much awaited return from Adele.
Additionally, Drake eventually dropped Certified Lover Boy, albeit just days after what was probably one of the best album rollouts we've seen in years, courtesy of Kanye West's Donda.
We even had Justin Bieber remix one of the biggest afrobeats songs of this decade so far, 'Essence' by Wiz Kid and Tems. But that wasn't to be the only time this year we had a major artist remix a massive track. Less than a week ago, the UK's very own Ed Sheeran dropped a remix to Fireboy DML's summer smash, 'Peru.'
All in all, it was great to see so many new artists blow up, so many of my favourites drop new projects and of course, to find lots of new artists to listen to.
Now on to the playlist - 5 hours worth of most of my favourite songs of 2021.
Now when it comes to albums, I'm not even going to put myself through that stress - way too many to name.
However I really enjoyed Wale's 'Folarin II,' Goldlink's 'Haram!' and Mariah The Scientist's 'Ry Ry World.' I think it goes without saying that Donda and Certified Lover Boy would definitely be on my hypothetical list along with Dave's 'We're All In This Together' and Tiwa Savage's 'Water & Garri.'
What was your favourite song of the year? and drop some new artists to check out in 2022!
